2004 Jeep Liberty Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Catalytic Converter on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: First, lift the vehicle, make sure it is stable, soak the bolts and nuts with heat valve lubricant and give it about five minutes to work. Free the bolts that secure the crossover pipe to the catalytic converter, pull the wiring off from the oxygen sensor and break the clamp's nuts holding the catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe attachment. First, pull off the oxygen sensors, take out the two bolts and nuts at the manifold, gently lower the catalyst assembly, remove it if it's near the transmission and leave the catalyst assembly in the vehicle if not fitted with one. Check the stainless steel case for any shapes that suggest it's been heated too much and make sure the heat shield is not loose or misshapen. If you think the core has been damaged, tapping the bottom using a rubber mallet could possibly reveal problems. Join the front pipe in position with the flange on the exhaust manifold, then clamp it down to 10 Nm (95 in. lbs.) torque. Put the bolts in place at the muffler and front exhaust area, tightening the clamp nuts to 27 Nm (19 ft. lbs.) and then join the oxygen sensor wiring. Slide the car down onto the lift, turn on the engine and look for any exhaust leaks and contact with the body panels. If anything needs adjustment, change the alignment.
