2005 Jeep Liberty Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Catalytic Converter on a 2.4L Engine on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: First lift and hold up the 2.4L car, saturate the bolts and nuts with heat valve lubricant and let it sit for 5 minutes before continuing. Take the electrical plug out of the oxygen sensor, unbolt the front exhaust/catalytic converter pipe from the muffler flange and remove the bolts and flanged nuts at the manifold. After lowering the catalyst assembly, pull it out of the mount at the transmission if you have one and then take out the front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter from the vehicle. Check the converter's stainless steel enclosure for bends or swelling and verify that the heat shield isn't damaged or loose. Banging the bottom of a catalyst with a rubber mallet may reveal an internal rupture. During installation, secure the front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter closing assembly into the mount at the transmission if equipped and to the exhaust manifold flange connection. Fit the bolts at where the muffler and front pipe connect, but don't tighten them yet, then make certain the exhaust pipe is at least 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) clear of the frame and all underbody parts. Tighten the exhaust manifold bolt to reach 27 Nm and then tighten the front exhaust pipe and catalytic converter to the muffler flange nuts at 27 Nm torque. Reattach the oxygen sensor electrical connector, lift the vehicle, start it and check the exhaust for any leaks, fixing them when you find them. Make sure the exhaust is correctly embedded in the body panels and change any parts that require adjustment.
