How to Service an Exhaust Manifold on 2004 Jeep Liberty?

Before working on the exhaust manifold, lift the vehicle, disconnect the exhaust pipe and then bring the vehicle back down. After that, unplug the upstream oxygen sensor from the rear of the exhaust manifold, move the air cleaner bracket aside and remove the heat shield. Loosen and detach the bolts connecting the manifold and cylinder head and remove the manifold for a look. Throw out the gasket if you have one and make sure to clean all parts of the manifold and cylinder head. Check that the manifolds are flat and undamaged by running a straight edge along all gasket surfaces. If you find any cracks, replace the pipeline. Wash the parts that will join the exhaust manifold, attach the manifold with a new gasket and tighten the screws to 20 Nm (175 in. lbs.). Attach the exhaust pipe to the manifold, ensuring it's tightened with 37 Nm (27 ft. lbs.) of torque and afterwards attach and connect the oxygen sensor, heat shield and air cleaner bracket.
