2004 Jeep Wrangler Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Camshaft on 2004 Jeep Wrangler?
A: You should first pull off the cylinder head cover, the position sensor for the camshaft, the target magnet and the timing belt. Job two, unmount the camshaft sprockets and open the rear cover of the timing belt, discover the bearing caps one by one and unbolt the outer bearing caps initially. Loose each of the camshaft attaching fasteners following a specified order, noticing that the intake camshaft (numbered 6) has a differently spaced thrust bearing face from the other camshafts. Make sure you recognize the camshafts and only then remove them from the cylinder head. Once you've removed rocker arms, arrange them so they can be put back precisely in the original location. Wipe the camshaft with an appropriate solution and check the journals of the camshaft bearing for signs of wear or tight spots, plus the head of the cylinder for any scratches or blocked holes. Check the cam lobe and bearing regions for unusual damage and if anything is found, replace the camshaft. Check how much wear the lobe has, with a max value of 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) and a maximum wear of 0.254 mm (0.010 inch); if it goes past that limit, replace the camshaft. During the installation, don't let any of the pistons reach top dead center, apply oil to the camshaft journals, rocker arm tubes and lobes and make sure the rockers go back where they originally belonged. Set the camshafts on the cylinder head bearing journals, put on the bottom right and left bearing caps labeled No. 2 - 5, right No. 6 and tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Use the Mopar Gasket Maker on bearing caps No. 1 and 6, install those caps and tighten the M8 fasteners to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). After the camshaft oil seals, put in the camshaft target magnet and camshaft position sensor, then install the cylinder head cover, timing belt rear cover and camshaft sprocket and finally fit the timing belt.
