2004 Jeep Wrangler Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Cover on 2004 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The timing belt cover is serviced and repaired by initially removing the crankshaft vibration damper and the generator drive belt tensioner assembly. After that, loosen the bolts holding the timing belt front cover and pull off the covers. To remove the rear cover, take out the front covers and then the timing belt. Use Special Tool 6847 to secure the camshaft sprocket while taking out the center bolt, after which remove the timing belt idler pulley. Remove the rear cover fasteners and take out the cover from the engine after that. Start the installation by securing the timing belt rear cover using the bolts, while keeping the bolts at 10 lbs. per inch of torque. You should only use a wrench to hand tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt or else you could damage the timing locating pin. Using Special Tool 6848, place both camshaft sprockets and the camshaft target ring in position and tighten the center bolt to 101 Nm (75 ft. lbs.). As the next step, attach the idler pulley for the timing belt and tighten the bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.); then install the timing belt and the accessory drive bracket. After finishing the installation, tighten the front covers to 7 Nm (60 inch lbs.) and place in the generator drive belt tensioner and crankshaft vibration damper again.
