2005 Chrysler Crossfire Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Steering Knuckle on 2005 Chrysler Crossfire?
A: Before removing the steering knuckle, check that the shock absorber is still in place, lift and support the car and remove the front wheel and tire assembly. After that, take out the front disc brake caliper, rotor and wheel hub. Remove the dust shield by taking out the three hex screws (1) and then unscrew and remove the Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) which should pull right out of the steering knuckle. Look at the rubber boot covering the ball joint to see if it has worn or is damaged and fix it where you find damage and hold the stud with an allen wrench when turning the nut. Take off the nut from the tie rod joint stud with Special Tool C-3894-A Two Jaw Puller to remove the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Don't try to tighten the bolt on the special tool with a pneumatic tool. Following that, undo the lower control arm support ball joint nut and use Special Tool 9168 Ball Joint Puller to remove the ball joint. Remember that pneumatic tools can't be used to tighten the nut. After that, free the steering knuckle from the upper control arm by unfastening the nut (1) from the upper ball joint rod and pushing out the upper ball joint with Special Tool 9168 Ball Joint Puller. Release (1) the bolts from the ball joint, free (1) the ball joint with the puller and check it for any slack, tightness or sounds-as well as for tears or rips on the ball joint's boot. Measure the steering knuckle when it is required. Attach the steering knuckle along with the nut to the top ball joint stud, giving it 45 Nm of torque, then do the same with the bottom ball joint stud and tighten it to 105 Nm. Attach the tie rod and nut to the steering knuckle and tighten just below 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.), then do the same for the Wheel Speed Sensor and bolt. After that, fix the disc brake dust shield with the three bolts (1). Apply 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.) of torque to them. Then, set the wheel hub (3), disc brake rotor (1) and disc brake caliper (1) in place. Then, reattach the front wheel and tire, lower the car and examine the vehicle's alignment.
