2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Automatic Transmission Filter for the 40TE on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Start by reading your vehicle's owner manual to learn when the 40TE fluid and filter should be serviced or repaired. Only use Mopar® ATF+4 for your transmission and remember to change the filter each time you change the oil. Afterwards, clean the magnet in the oil pan with a clean, dry towel. If you remove the transaxle, drain the old fluid and insert a new filter. First, put the vehicle up on a hoist and set a container beneath the transaxle oil pan. Release the pressure from the pan bolts, hit a corner to loosen it and then take out the oil pan to let the fluid drain. Change the filter and o-ring on the valve body, clean both the pan and the magnet, use new Silicone Adhesive sealant to mount the pan and tighten the bolts to 19 Nm (165 inch lbs.). Add four quarts of Mopar® ATF+4 through the dipstick hole, begin the engine and leave it idling for no less than a minute. Move the selector lever for a brief second between each position, after parking the car and applying the brakes. Look at the transaxle fluid level and add fluid until it is 3 mm (1/8 inch) below the lowest line shown on the dipstick, then recheck it after your vehicle has run at normal temperature (180°F). Make sure the dipstick is all the way in to stop dirt from contaminating the transaxle. Before using this method, confirm the transaxle is hot, use a correct suction tool and feed the suction end into the dipstick tube until the lowest part of the oil pan is reached. Start by following the manufacturer's directions to get the old fluid out, remove the suction line, add four quarts of Mopar® ATF+4, start the engine and go through the steps of checking and topping up the fluid again.
