2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Power Steering Cooler Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Cooler on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The first step to servicing the power steering fluid cooler is to siphon out a lot of the fluid from the fluid reservoir. Raise the car, disconnect the hose clamp connecting the return hose to the cooler and take off the return hose. Following that, take out the hose clamp which holds the power steering cooler fluid hose to the steel fitting in the gear outlet. Undo both of the screws joining the cooler to the front suspension crossmember. If you have an LHD, open the clamp on the right front side of the power steering gear housing and take the cooler tube out. After taking out the cooler, slide a hose clamp onto the end of the power steering cooler inlet hose so it doesn't touch the steel fitting on the power steering gear when you attach it. Place the cooler outlet tube inside the open tube clamp on the right front of the housing and snap it in, then tighten the clamp down. Pull the power steering hose onto the outlet on the steering gear and wrap the hose clamp around the cooler hose beyond the rubber bead joining it to the outlet. Reconnect the two screws securing the cooler to the front suspension crossmember and tighten them to no more than 90 inch lbs. The power steering return hose should be carefully attached to the cooler outlet tube, with a clamp on the hose, making sure the return hose is fitted past the bead at the end of the tube. Bring the vehicle to ground height, run the initial operation for the power steering pump and examine all connections for leaks.
