2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Power Steering Cooler Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Cooler on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The first step for vehicles without a turbocharged engine and having an externally mounted cooler is to drain the machine as much fluid as you can from the power steering fluid reservoir. Lift the vehicle and remove the clamp securing the fluid return hose (3) to the power steering fluid cooler (2) before taking off the hose from the cooler. In LHD vehicles, disconnect the hose from the power steering gear outlet port (1) and remove the clamp you see there. After that, release the two screws fixing the cooler to the front suspension crossmember, then open and remove the tube routing clamp on the right front of the power steering gear housing. The process for tightening the hose clamp and screws on RHD vehicles is the same. After the cooler comes out, an installer puts a hose clamp on the gear end of the power steering cooler which removes the steel fitting from the gear. When using LHD vehicles, fit the cooler outlet tube to be in line with the open tube routing clamp and press it in until the clamp is closed. Hook the steering gear outlet end of the hose onto fitting (1) and then clamp it down. Place the screws through holes in the front suspension crossmember, putting them in the cooler and tighten them to 10 Nm (90 inch lbs.). For RHD vehicles, repeat these same procedures for the cooler inlet hose and screws. After that, set the fluid return hose (3) onto the outlet tube of the power steering fluid cooler (2) and fasten it with the hose clamp. Turn the vehicle upside down, perform the initial operating stroke on the power steering pump and make sure to check for leaks.
