2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Tie Rod End on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before servicing the tie rod end, you should lift the car and remove the wheel and tire assembly. Carefully loosen the jam nut till you can push the tie rod through the collar and pull it away from the tie rod end, then break the nut and remove it. After that, hold the tie rod stud still and then use a wrench to unscrew the nut that secures the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle. First, use Remover MB991113 to get the outer tie rod off the steering knuckle and after that, remove the tie rod heat shield. Take the outer tie rod off the inner tie rod. Before installing, place the nut on the inner tie rod thread and make certain the collar is put on the correct side. Put the outer tie rod on the inner one, then set the collar around it. Insert the jam nut on the thread to secure, not to tighten, the collar. Make sure that the holes and tangs on the heat shield and steering arm match up and then set the heat shield back down onto the knuckle. Secure the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle, put the attaching nut onto the stud and with the stud not moving, fix it by tightening the nut. Stick a crowfoot wrench onto the torque wrench and tighten the nut until the wrench displays 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.). Reattach the tire and wheel set, make sure the wheel is screwed in by 135 Nm, lower back the vehicle, then check and set front toe.
