2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Steering Wheel Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Remove and Install a Steering Wheel on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Prior to disconnecting the steering wheel, do not lay a non-deployed air bag facedown on a hard surface because it could activate without warning and injure you. Shut off the front air bag system by disconnecting and separating the battery's negative cable to keep it from deploying by mistake. Give the capacitor about two minutes to discharge prior to beginning your work. Rotate the wheel straight ahead and then turn it half way to the right and secure it with the ignition lock. Pull off the front panel, remove the driver air bag and remove the bar that keeps the steering wheel in place. Grab onto the steering wheel with a steering wheel puller and gently move it around as you lead the wires through. Make sure the steering wheel stays at the halfway point toward the right and the steering column is in locked position during installation. Place the three foam retaining clip pads into the air bag seats, putting in extra ones if any are missing. Line up the flat part of the steering wheel with the clock spring and draw the horn lead, air bag lead and speed control lead carefully through the bigger slot. Secure the steering wheel with the retaining bolt, applying 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) of torque and set the driver air bag in place again. Do not attach the battery negative cable until the air bag system test procedure is over. Install your battery and close the hood and then make sure both the car and its systems are all working.
