2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Power Steering Hose Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Hose for Pressure Hose on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Start by removing as much power steering fluid as possible and then lift your vehicle. Remove the tube nut connecting the power steering fluid pressure hose to the gear, then pull the hose out and empty the fluid down the car's drain. Take out the bolts that link the routing clamps to the collar of the engine and the routing clamp to its front end. Unfasten the screws on the right tire and wheel assembly and then remove the front fascia to get to the fastener screw opening up the drive-belt splash shield. Take out the screws holding the splash shield, the shield itself and finally the accessory drive-belt from the A/C compressor. Remove the electrical cables and four bolts so the compressor comes loose and sits more centrally in the vehicle. To detach the pressure hose, start a long crowfoot wrench by the hose and hold a towel between the wrench and the pump pulley so there is no harm to it. When the power steering hose is removed, you should slide on new O-rings and cover them with power steering fluid before putting everything back. Secure one end of the new pressure hose in the engine compartment, leading it by the left A/C compressor underneath the pump pressure fitting and attaching it loosely at the front of the engine. Thread the nut on the hose tube into the pump and use a crowfoot wrench and a torque wrench to tighten it to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Secure the A/C compressor using its four bolts at 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) tightness, reconnect all electric connectors and put on the A/C drive belt. Replace the drive-belt splash shield and secure it with its fasteners first and next tighten the screws holding the front fascia in place. Following this, put in the front wheel and tire and tighten the wheel bolts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Attach the pressure hose routing bracket to the engine in front using 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) of torque and attach the pressure hose also using 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) to the structural collar. Wash the dirt from the open end of the power steering hose as well as the gear port and replace and lubricate the O-rings. Rout the pressure hose carefully from the front suspension crossmember to the driveshaft, then hook it to the power steering gear and tighten its tube nut to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). When finished, take it lower, work through the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation procedure and check all the hose fittings for leaks.
