2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Wheel Cylinder Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Wheel Cylinder for Drum Brakes on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: First, fit a brake pedal holder, then press the brake pedal beyond an inch, so that the master cylinder becomes blocked from the brake hydraulic system. Lift and support the vehicle, then remove the rear tire and wheel from their holding around its axle. First, break the rear brake tube's connection with the wheel cylinder and take out the brake drum, then remove the brake shoes from their support plate. If they are wet with brake fluid or grease, the brake shoes need to be changed. Remove the brake wheel cylinder mounting bolts and take the cylinder from the mounting screws on the brake support plate, scraping away any previous sealer used on the surfaces. After you remove the brake drums, look for issues like leaks, cuts, tears or heat cracks on the wheel cylinder boots; clean the wheel cylinders and repair or replace them if anything seems wrong. Should a wheel cylinder start to leak and your brake lining be coated in brake fluid, you should change the brake shoes. When you install the wheel cylinder, set it on the brake support plate and tighten the bolt until the torque is 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.). Start the nut at the rear brake tube onto the wheel cylinder and tighten it until the torque reading shows 17 Nm (145 inch lbs.). Place the rear brake shoes onto the support plate, set the rear brake and lastly attach the brake drum to the hub. Attach the tire and wheel back to the mounting bolts and increase the bolts' tightness twice: once to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) for each nut. Drop the car, remove its brake pedal holder, give the wheel cylinder a clean bleed when needed and then check its brakes during a drive on the road.
