2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Parking Brake Shoes on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Raise the vehicle and take off the rear tire and wheel before servicing and repairing the parking brake shoes. After that, separate the rear disc brake caliper assembly from the rotor and store it while you get rid of the rotor. Remove the dust cap from the rear hub and bearing, then take out the retaining nut and washer at the rear hub and bearing assembly and pull it off the rear spindle. Unhook the rear brake shoe assembly from its clip, turn the brake shoe adjuster all the way short and remove the adjuster assembly from the parking brake shoes. Lift the lower shoe-to-shoe spring, remove the rear brake shoe from its bracket and take both the rear brake shoe and upper return spring out. Pop out the front brake's hold-down clip and take out the front brake shoe assembly. At this stage, place a hold-down clip on the front brake shoe, assemble the rear brake shoe and upper return spring and check that the rear brake shoe is on the adapter. Add the lower return spring, then fit the brake shoe adjuster, star wheel side up and set the main brake shoe with its hold-down tab. Match the parking brake shoes to a diameter of 171 mm (6.75 inch), assemble the rear hub and bearing together and secure them to the spindle. Squeeze the retaining nut to 217 Nm (160 ft. lbs.) when installing. Swap out the hub and bearing dust cap, fit the rear brake rotor and mount the rear disc brake caliper again. Put the tire and wheel back on, tighten the wheel nuts with a torque wrench to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), operate the parking brake shoes as needed and then slowly lower the vehicle.
