2005 Dodge Dakota Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How Often Should You Replace Your Automatic Transmission Filter for Optimal Performance on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: You can find the recommended service intervals in Lubrication & Maintenance. Secure the vehicle in safety stands and then balance it with supports. Place the transmission pan above a big drain pan for extra safety. Tighten the bolts of the front and sides and loosen the bolts holding the back part in place. Take your time separating the front of the pan from the transmission so that oil gets drained into the pan. Once the fluid is drained, rest the pan properly so it doesn't tip and remove all the bolts. Then, lower the pan away from the transmission and pour out the remaining fluid into the drain, hold. Then, unscrew the screw that holds the primary oil filter (1) to the valve body, split the filter away from the oil pump on the valve body and pour the fluid in the filter into the drain pan. Look at the seal on the oil filter in the pump; if you find it broken or only partially installed, throw it away, but if it looks good, you can re-use it. When you need to change the cooler return filter (2), first use Oil Filter Wrench 8321 to take the filter out and then dispose of all contaminated materials you remove carefully. Make sure the pan and magnet don't have an excess of metal; a small amount of clutch debris is okay except if it results in slippage or transmission lag. Insure the pan and magnet are clean by using the proper cleaning solution and scrape away the old gasket material from the transmission case and pan with a gasket scraper. Install the main oil filter seal so that it touches the oil pump - do not connect it to the filter neck instead. Replace the primary oil filter seal in the oil pump inlet bore with a suitable tool when it must be repaired. Set the new filter on the valve mount and into the oil pump, followed by putting the screw in to secure the filter (1) to the valve body and then tighten it to 4.5 Nm (40 inch lbs.). If required, mount a fresh cooler return filter (2) to the transmission and tighten it to 14.12 Nm (125 inch lbs.). Cover the transmission case mounting surface with a thin layer of RTV sealant, locate the pan flat on top and insert and tighten the bolts to 11.8 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Let the vehicle down and put Atf +4 Mopar(R) into the transmission. After removing the dipstick, insert a funnel into the fill tube and pour 10 pints (5 quarts) of Atf +4 if the fluid and filter were updated alone. After an overhaul, use 24 pints (12 quarts) and pour in the Atf while leaving the funnel in place in the fill tube. In the end, examine your transmission fluid and fix or adjust it when required.
