2005 Dodge Dakota Windshield Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Remove and Install a Windshield on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: Make sure to study all of the safety warnings and cautions before taking out the windshield. Remove both screws holding the molding on the a-pillars and remove the molding. After that, take out the rear view mirror, the cowl grille and the a-pillar trim panels. After that, remove the headliner. Separate the adhesive with a windshield cut-out wire or its equivalent. Be sure to remove the windshield with caution. Give the urethane at least 24 hours to dry before putting your car back into use. Roll down the left and right front door windows and, if you have a rear glass door, open it to relieve pressure in the car. Carefully clean the windshield fence and leave a little old urethane on the edges and then replace missing or damaged spacers around the outside of the windshield opening. When you're reusing a windshield, remove the old adhesive from the edges of the glass and flatten the bead to keep it about 1 mm thick. Install four new spacers on the a-pillars, set the lower spacer assemblies into the slotted holes and look over the installation. Place the windshield in the middle of the opening, position the lower spacers how you wish and apply adhesive tape to help install the windshield. Lay out the tape and take out the windshield. Make sure the re-gluing area is free of debris, undamaged glass primer is in place and apply primer to any part of the primer that was damaged. Following these steps, install the windshield, lower spacer assemblies, protect with spacers and look for problems while still on the car. Wash the surface where you will glue, dab around the glass with primer and let it dry for a few minutes. Carefully remove dirt from the windshield opening, level the older adhesive and add more primer if you must. With the nozzle of your adhesive, apply a bead of glue along the windshield seal and straight away install the windshield within 5 minutes. You should try to make your beads 9.5 - 12.0 mm wide and 12.7 - 14.0 mm in height. Use the guide on the tape to position the windshield, then very carefully press it into place. Set the headliner, a-pillar trim, cowl grille, rearview mirror and windshield molding retainer into place, then attach it with the screws.
