2005 Dodge Durango Parking Brake Shoe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix Parking Brake Shoes on 2005 Dodge Durango?
A: First, elevate and secure the vehicle, then unscrew the tire and wheel combination, the disc brake caliper and the disc brake rotor to replace the parking brake shoes. Pull back the lock for the parking brake cable and uncouple the park brake cable from behind where it attaches to the rotor assembly to help you take apart the shoes. After that, take out the axle shaft and separate the rear park brake shoes. All brake components should be cleaned using a wet cloth or brake cleaner, but not with other types of cleaners. You can get rid of light rust and scale from your brake shoe contact pads by sanding with fine sandpaper. A riveted shoe needs to be changed when only 0.78 mm of the rivets remain and you should replace a bonded shoe when its thickness is 1.6 mm. Check that the lining spreads evenly over the entire drum and examine the shoes to see if contact is only on one side; a drum with a bend or uneven shape should also be changed. If the star wheel or threads have been damaged or if rust or corrosion on the screws is extreme, replace the entire adjuster screw assembly. Throw away broken, reverse or collapsed brake springs and retainer parts if you notice brake drag, as the heat from burning brakes can bend and weaken these springs. Check the brake shoe contact pads on the support plate and remove and replace the support plate if any are worn, rusted through or distorted. When installing, place the rear park brake shoes back on, insert the axle shaft and connect the park brake cable to the support plate lever. First, unlock the park brake cable, adjust the rear brake shoes and after that, install the disc brake rotor and caliper. Lastly, put on the tire and wheel combo and bring the car down, lowering the vehicle. Experts suggest inserting a gentle foot on the parking brake pedal when coming to a stop from 25 mph on concrete or pavement to condition the parking brake system on a brand new vehicle or a vehicle after lining replacement.
