2005 Dodge Neon Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What Are the Differences Between Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve Refacing on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: The first step in refacing valves and valve seats is to verify both the dimensions and angles match those of the valves. With a suitable machine, put valves back into place and inspect what's left-if the remaining margin on an intake valve is less than 0.79 mm (0.0312 inch) or less than 1.19 mm (0.0469 inch) on an exhaust valve, these should be replaced. Worn or burned valve seats can sometimes be fixed if the correct angle and seat width is kept, but replace the cylinder head if the Region Guideline does not apply; only the intake valve seat should be reset on a cylinder head with a width of 2.0 mm (0.079 inch) or greater and the exhaust valve seat when it is 2.5 mm (0.098 inch) or more, using the Region Guideline. Use the right machine on the valve seats to allow for a proper size on the guide pilot which will accurately seat and polish the stones or cutters. Use a valve seat runout dial indicator to check that the difference between the outer and inner valves does not go over 0.051 mm (0.002 inch). Cover the valve seat in Prussian blue to see if it's in contact, then lightly apply blue and position the valve to test its motion. If you see blue on the face of the valve at its center, the connection is fine. If it damages the seat around the top edge, use a 15 degrees stone or cutter to bring the seat lower; if damage is around the bottom edge, gently increase the seat height with a 65 degrees stone. When fitted in the right position, the width between the intake and exhaust seats must be 0.75 - 1.25 mm (0.030 - 0.049 inch). Following the machining of valve seats or faces, look at the valve tip to spring seat dimensions A and check their measurements by grinding the valve tip and checking from the valve tip to the spring seat, as the valve seat is installed in the head. The engineers have to reground the valve tip to avoid seal climate during installation.
