2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: The first step is to unplug the battery's negative cable and empty the cooling system of its fluid. Take off the electrical cooling fan and fan shroud assembly, then remove the fan and fan drive assembly. Open the timing cover and the lower radiator hose, then remove both end hoses. After that, you must take out the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (1), crankshaft damper, generator and A/C compressor. Since this engine is sealed with an anaerobic sealer, only use Mopar Grey Engine RTV sealant when servicing the front cover. You can remove the timing cover without first taking out the water pump. Open the bolts holding the timing cover to the engine block and remove the cover. Before you install the timing chain, rub the cover and block surface with rubbing alcohol, don't use any oil-based liquids or rough materials since they can harm the surface. Check the O-rings in the water passage for damage and replace them when it is required. Pipe engine RTV sealer (3) about 3 to 4 mm thick along the path on the front cover (1). After putting the cover on, fasten everything sequentially at 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Replace the crankshaft damper, A/C compressor, generator and the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly. Link the both upper and lower radiator hoses, the two heater hoses and the electric fan shroud to the viscous fan drive assembly. After that, fill the coolant and attach the battery negative cable again.
