2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install a Belt Tensioner on 3.7L and 4.7L Engines on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before installing a new belt which has been used less than 15 minutes, the tang on the tensioner and the stop on the housing should be only 24 mm (0.94 inches) apart on the 3.7L and 4.7L engines. Should the required specifications be disregarded, you want to look for an incorrect belt size or width, worn parts on different accessories such as the A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator, pulleys that can move freely, misalignments or improper belt alignment. You should replace your used belt if the tensioner indexing arrow is now on the minimum tension symbol, as it can't go any lower. Start with removing the accessory drive belt and following that by removing the tensioner assembly from the bracket. Since spring tension is very high, it is not recommended to disassemble the automatic tensioner which should be taken apart as a complete assembly, leaving only the pulley. After that, take the pulley bolt and the pulley off the tensioner. To install, join the pulley and bolt to the tensioner, setting the bolt at 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) of torque. Position the back of the tensioner above the bolt on the front part, put the mounting bolt through the holes and tighten it with 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Additionally, position the accessory drive belt and match the marked places.
