2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Thermostat Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Thermostat on a 3.7L/4.7L Engine on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Make sure the cooling system is neither warm nor pressurized before you start the thermostat work on a 3.7L/4.7L engine. If your coolant is clean, put it into a clean container to reuse it. Take off the negative battery cable, then let the cooling system drain and lift the car to proceed. Take out the splash shield next, followed by the bottom clamp on the radiator hose and the hose itself right at the thermostat housing. Remove the bolts that hold the thermostat housing in place, the housing itself and the thermostat. Before attaching the thermostat, check the mating surfaces are clean on the timing chain cover and the thermostat housing, then lower the thermostat by placing it spring side down into the special groove of the timing chain cover. Line up the thermostat housing on the cover for the timing chain and fix the housing-to-timing chain cover bolts, securing them to 13 Nm. While doing so, ensure the housing is properly centered and even, otherwise cracks, thread damage or coolant leaks could occur. Put the lower radiator hose back onto the thermostat housing, mount the splash shield, lower the car, fill the cooling system, link the negative battery cable, start the engine and make sure to check for leaks as it's warming.
