2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair the Timing Cover on 2005 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Removal of both negative battery cables and use of a hoist are necessary before starting to service or repair the front engine plate. Drain a portion of the engine coolant into a container you can use again and then bring the car down. Get rid of the radiator upper hose, viscous fan/drive/shroud assembly, accessory drive belt and cooling fan support/hub at the front of the engine. Raise the vehicle again so you can take off the power steering pump, the accessory drive belt tensioner and continue with the crankshaft damper and speed indicator ring. Carefully tilt your vehicle and unbolt the gear cover from the housing, ensuring you do not damage where the gasket fits. Use a seal pilot tool from your crankshaft front seal service kit to first install the new front crankshaft oil seal. Populate all through holes on the gear housing cover with a bead of Mopar(R) Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant, place it over the engine ensuring the seal guide lines up and screw in the bolts, tightening them to 24 Nm or 18 ft. lbs. Replace the sealing pilot with the front seal dust shield. Elevate the vehicle once more so you can put in the speed indicator ring and crankshaft damper and then lower it. Assemble the fan, support/hub, tightening bolts to 32 Nm and then place the power steering pump and accessory drive belt tensioner with the bolt firmly torqued to 43 Nm. Place the accessory drive belt, add the cooling fan/drive/shroud assembly and thread the upper hose onto the radiator. Put in the coolant, link the battery cables, turn on the engine and look for leaks.
