Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2006 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: When servicing or repairing the timing cover, first remove the negative battery cable, then take off the engine cover, air cleaner assembly and drain the coolant from the system. After that, remove the accessory drive belt, fan, fan drive assembly, coolant bottle, washer bottle and fan shroud, but do not touch the A/C lines. First, set the A/C compressor aside and go on to take out the generator, both upper and lower radiator hose and the heater hose at the timing cover. Take out the accessory drive belt tensioner, both idler pulleys and the crankshaft damper. You don't need to undo the hoses from the pump; instead, move the power steering pump aside and take it off, then remove the dipstick support bolt, let out the engine oil and remove the oil pan and corresponding pick up tube. It is possible to get the timing cover off without removing the water pump. After finishing with the timing cover bolts, take the cover off and confirm the timing cover slide bushings are inside the cover. Before attaching the timing chain, regenerate the timing cover and block and always fit it with a fresh gasket inside. Install the slide bushings in the timing cover, fit the cover along with the new gasket in place and screw the fasteners to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) and the big lifting stud to 55 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Lift up the oil pan and pick up tube and replace the A/C compressor, generator, power steering pump and dipstick support bolt. Fit the thermostat housing, crankshaft damper, accessory drive belt tensioner assembly, two idler pulleys, lower radiator hose, both heater hoses, radiator fan shroud, fan and fan drive, accessory drive belt, coolant bottle, washer bottle, upper radiator hose and air cleaner assembly. At this point, fill the cooling system, add oil to the engine, attach the negative terminal on the battery and set the engine cover.
