2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can a Dimmer Switch Enhance Safety When Servicing Airbag-Equipped Components on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Air bag systems on vehicles should be stopped by disconnecting the negative battery cable, waiting two minutes for the system capacitor to drain and then isolating the battery before touching any parts in the steering wheel, steering column or instrument panel. Unplug the battery negative cable and wait for the air bag system capacitor to drain to first remove the combination switch. From beneath the steering column, remove the three screws connecting the lower steering column shroud to the multi-function switch housing. On both sides of the upper shroud at the parting line, bend slightly inward to release the snaps then pop off both shrouds. After that, detach the Steering Control Module from the steering column, then remove the two screws holding the left multifunction switch to it. Pull out the two small pins by the screw mounts and release the connection between the left multi-function switch and the SCM. Install the multi-function switch to the left side of the SCM, push its retaining tabs into place and tighten the two screws to 2.5 Nm (22 in. lbs.). Align and fit the lower shroud in place and then attach it to the multi-function switch mounting housing with three screws tightened to 2 Nm (17 in. lbs.). Install the upper column shroud so the hazard switch protrudes, align the snaps and get the snaps to line up by hand before finishing the negative cable connection.
