2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Starter Motor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before fixing the starter, take off the negative cable from the battery, then put the vehicle on a lift to support it. When the vehicle comes with 4WD and specific transmissions, take out the two support bracket bolts at the transmission and slightly pry the support bracket to access the lower starter mounting bolt. When you have an automatic transmission, unscrew and remove the two bolts. Start by moving the starter motor up front so that nothing blocks the housing's nosing. Then, remember to provide support underneath so the starter motor isn't suspended from the wire harness. Drop the starter motor slightly and tilt down the nose enough to get at the nut which holds the battery positive cable wire harness connector eyelet to the solenoid battery terminal stud. Remove the battery positive cable wire harness connector eyelet from the solenoid battery terminal stud and unplug the battery positive cable wire harness connector from the solenoid terminal receptacle and you can then remove the starter motor. First, attach the solenoid wire to the starter motor, ensure the battery cable is on the solenoid stud, then install and tighten the eyelet nut following the correct torque, don't let the starter motor hang from the wire harness. Put the starter motor on the transmission, add the cooler tube bracket if you have an automatic transmission, install and tighten both bolts holding the starter to torque specs, lower the vehicle and then reconnect the negative battery cable.
