2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Thermostat Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain a Thermostat on a 3.7L/4.7L Engine on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: When servicing a thermostat in a 3.7L/4.7L engine, disconnect the negative battery lead and, if the coolant is clean, drain it into a clean container to use later. Lift the vehicle on a hoist, take the splash shield off and remove the lower radiator hose by unclamping it from the rubber port. After that, take out the bolts holding the thermostat housing in place and then get rid of the housing and thermostat as well. Clean the location where the timing chain cover and thermostat housing mate before putting in the new thermostat, with its spring side into the hollow machined groove on the timing chain cover. Connect the thermostat housing on the timing chain cover and tighten down the housing with two bolts to 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.), making certain the thermostat is straight and centered. Attach the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing, put the splash shield back in place, raise the car, add a coolant to the system, link the negative battery cable and finally start the engine to run it while watching for leaking fluid.
