2005 Jeep Liberty Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Universal Joint Single Cardan on 2005 Jeep Liberty?
A: The first step to serving and repairing a single cardan universal joint is to remove the propeller shaft which has the cardan joint inside the tube yoke. Tap the outside of the bearing cap with a drift to unlock the snap-ring and then remove both snap rings that hold the yoke together. If you have a grease fitting, where the yoke meets the shaft, locate the fitting so it is aimed upward. Screw a 2 socket with an inside diameter slightly bigger than the bearing cap cap into the press and put another 2 socket with an outside diameter smaller than the bearing cap on top of the bearing cap cap to press it through the yoke. Should pressing alone not release the bearing cap, give the yoke ear near it a couple of smart taps to dislodge it. Unscrew the bearing cap from the yoke, press the yoke over in the machine and straighten the cross 1. Make sure the bearing cap stays straight and in line while you remove it by holding the cross so you don't damage the edges of the yoke bore. For assembly, put EP N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease on the inside of the yoke bores. Place cross 1 in yoke 2, pointing the lube fitting up, if the module comes with one. Apply the bearing cap 1 over the cross end 2 of the piston rod and line up the cap with the yoke bore, then press it into the yoke bore sufficiently to go past the snap-ring groove. Follow the same steps to put in the other bearing cap as well. If you find the joint is stiff or won't turn freely, hit the yoke with a soft hammer to settle the needle bearings. Then, grease the lube fitting if your tractor has one.
