2006 Jeep Liberty Universal Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Universal Joint with a Cardan Joint in the Tube Yoke on 2006 Jeep Liberty?
A: For servicing or repairing a universal joint with a cardan joint in the tube yoke, first tap the bearing cap on the outside and remove both snap ring 1 clips to release the snap rings. Place the yoke with its grease fitting aiming up and a socket 2 with a large enough inside diameter below the yoke on a press. Press through the yoke by using another socket 2 with a compact enough outer diameter for the upper bearing cap, then lower cap 1 down. Tap the ear on the yoke near the bearing cap if it hasn't come loose by hand after applying pressure. Remove the bearing cap from the yoke, flip the yoke over in the press and press on the cross 1 until the remaining bearing cap can be taken off, making certain the cross or bearing cap doesn't bend to stop the yoke bore from getting scored as it comes out. Apply EP N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease to the interior of the yoke bores. Join cross 1 to yoke 2 with the lube fitting rising if the engine is so equipped and finish by putting a bearing cap 1 over cross end 2, aligning it with the yoke bore. Tighten the bearing cap into the yoke bore until you can see the snap ring groove. Repeat this for the other side. Gently hammer on the yoke to settle the needle bearings if it feels tight or awkward-and if your yoke is equipped with a lube fitting, don't forget to add some grease there, too.
