2004 Jeep Liberty Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain Universal Joints in Single Cardan Systems on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: You cannot replace any single part in a single cardan universal joint; as soon as just one piece becomes worn or leaks, the whole joint needs to be replaced. Removal of the propeller shaft should be the first step. Tap the outside of the bearing cap assembly with a drift to loosen the snap ring; afterward, remove the snap rings from both parts of the yoke. Hold the bearing cap directly below the yoke in an arbor press or vise, making the yoke rest on a large-size socket, with the grease fitting directed upwards if there is one. Put a socket that fits inside the upper bearing cap on top of the yoke, press it through the center and release the lower bearing cap. If you can't remove the bearing cap by hand after pressing, lightly hit the yoke ear near the cap to loosen it. By turning the yoke over, straightening the cross in the open hole and pressing hard at its tip, you can remove the second cap. It is important to set the cross or the bearing cap up straight to steer clear of scoring the walls while the yoke bore is installed. You should use either EP N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease on the inside of the yoke bores when installing the yoke. Put the cross in the yoke and ensure the lube fitting, if it exists, points upwards. Add a bearing cap to the trunnion, adjusting it so it's straight along the yoke bore and allowing the needle bearings to stay upright. After pressing the bearing cap into the yoke bore, slide a snap ring into the groove. Repeat this method for the other bearing cap. If the joint is stiff or tight, hit the yoke with a soft hammer to push the needle bearings into their place. Apply grease to the lube fitting, if your engine has one and install the propeller shaft.
