2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Torque Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Torque Converter in a 41TE Automatic Transaxle on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Remove the transmission and torque converter from your vehicle and before you do this, place a suitable drain pan under the torque converter housing portion of the transmission. Be certain that the transmission is secure on either the lifting stand or on the work table, so the machine stays balanced after the heavy torque converter is taken out. Slide the torque converter forward so the center hub comes free of the oil pump seal and disconnect it from the transmission. Remove any sharp edges or scratches from the converter hub and drive using a 320/400 grit paper or crocus cloth so that nothing will harm the seal on the pump during installation. Apply transmission fluid to both the converter hub and oil pump seal lip before placing the torque converter onto the transmission to make sure you don't hurt the oil pump seal or bushing in the process. Make sure the torque converter is lined up with the oil pump's seal, place the hub inside the pump and turn the converter as you push it in until it sits fully within the pump gears. Ensure the surface of the converter lugs is 1/2 inch to the rear of the straightedge by weighing and measuring the seats with a scale and straightedge. If it helps, put a C-clamp around the converter connected to its housing for now and then place the transmission back into the car and add the needed fluid.
