2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Reinstall a Camshaft on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The first step to removing the camshaft is to remove the cylinder head cover and then take off the camshaft position sensor and camshaft target magnet. After that, take out the timing belt, camshaft sprockets and timing belt rear cover. Loosen bearing cap types from outside to inside and take care to use the correct sequence for each camshaft, as camshafts are not the same and the camshaft number 6 on the intake has the widest spacing between its thrust bearing faces. Confirm the camshafts before taking them out from the cylinder head. If you are removing rocker arms, label them correctly so they go back in the right place. Spray the camshaft with a suitable solvent and examine all the camshaft journals, watch for any damage orIndications of binding and inspect the cylinder head for any signs of damage as well as clogs in the oil channels. Look at the cam lobe and bearing for any unusual wear or harm and replace the camshaft if needed. If lobe wear is larger than 0.0254 mm or 0.010 inch which is the standard value or wear limit, then you should replace the camshaft. No pistons should be at top dead center during installation, all camshaft bearing journals, rocker arms and lobes should be properly lubricated and the rocker arms should be put back where they originally were if they're being reused. Lay the camshards on their bearing journals on the cylinder head and add bearing caps No. 2 - 5 and right No. 6 to both sides, tightening the M6 bolts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Uncap bearing caps 1 and 6, clean any oil from the areas they seal, then apply the Mopar Gasket Maker and install. Use an M8 fastener to tighten them to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Applying the end caps should come before the seals. Apply the Camshaft Oil Seal Installer MD-998306, place the camshaft oil seals and then replace the camshaft target magnet and camshaft position sensor. After that, secure the cylinder head cover, place the timing belt's rear cover on the engine and install its fasteners, add the timing belt tensioner and fit the camshaft sprockets with Holder 6847 to secure them.
