2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Timing Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Belt on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: The first thing to do is remove the negative battery cable and then take off the upper and lower front timing belt covers. Move the crankshaft until the oil pump housing's TDC mark comes in line with the trailing edge TDC mark on the crankshaft sprocket located on the camshaft. Take out the timing belt tensioner lock bolt and stick a 6 mm Allen wrench into the pulley's screw. Twist the top plate counterclockwise until the timing belt becomes loose and detach it. If your timing belt was damaged because it is not correctly aligned, remove and replace the parts for the belt tensioner and bracket as a bundle. Keep the camshaft sprocket(s) in place with Camshaft Sprocket Holder 6847 before unbolting the sprockets. Your best option for the crankshaft sprocket is Crankshaft Sprocket Remover 6793 and Crankshaft Sprocket Remover Insert C-4685-C2. Install the crankshaft sprocket while applying Crankshaft Damper/Sprocket Installer 6792 to be sure it is set at the proper depth. Put on the timing belt and push the camshaft sprockets into place with your hands. Tighten the center bolt to 115 Nm. Put the crankshaft sprocket at TDC by matching it with the arrow on the oil pump sensor housing and have the exhaust camshaft sprocket a 1/2 notch below the intake camshaft sprocket, making sure the arrows on both sprockets face upward. Initially, install the timing belt at the crankshaft and have it go around the water pump sprocket, idler pulley, one of the camshaft sprockets and tensioner. Rotate the exhaust camshaft counterclockwise to ensure marks are aligned and to tighten the belt. Move the top belt tensioner pulley plate counterclockwise until the setting notch is right over the spring tang and then tighten the tensioner lock bolt to 25 Nm. After you have removed the instruments, crank the engine clockwise a complete revolution and a half (2 whole revolutions) to let the belt sit properly and confirm that the timing marks of the crankshaft and camshaft are aligned. Confirm that the spring tang falls within the tolerance limit; if it doesn't, start the tension process over. Once done, replace both ones on the timing belt and link the negative cable back to the battery.
