Before servicing your muffler, make certain the exhaust system has cooled down, because it can be extremely hot close to the catalytic converter. Before taking off the part, lift the vehicle on a hoist and lube the fastener of the part with penetrating oil; use no petroleum for muffler or exhaust pipe isolators; rather, use liquid dish soap mixed with water. At the rear of the muffler, take out the exhaust system ground strap, then remove the band clamp from its support isolators to detach the muffler from the intermediate pipe. Strip the rust and debris off the mating areas to avoid loose contacts and remove any broken or damaged isolators, old and worn clamps, supports and attaching parts. Tightening clamps should only occur once every part is where it should be and the clearances are checked. Secure the muffler onto the intermediate pipe and connect the isolator supports underneath the vehicle, each from the front of the system, but only after checking the position and fit with the underbody components and tightening the band clamp to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) Do not tighten the band clamps to the maximum; if required, loosen them, remove the nut and curl the ends of the clamp back past the welded point until you can see the weld, then trim it down with a file or grinder, securing the new clamp with proper orientation. After that, secure the exhaust system ground strap, run the engine, check for leaks from the exhaust system and correct any contact between the exhaust and body panels.
