2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Catalytic Converter on 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before working on or fixing a catalytic converter, always let the exhaust system cool, as it easily gets very hot. Check the reasons behind the fault before you attempt to replace the catalytic converter. It's often the case that errors in air, fuel or ignition cause the problem. Tightening or loosening the clamp by hand is fine; when choosing to loosen, use a low-friction cleaning solution made from dish soap and water. Break the muffler/intermediate pipe assembly free by undoing the electrical connector of the downstream oxygen sensor and removing all isolators if they are in place. Extract the attaching bolts (3) of the 1.6L engine's catalytic converter and pull it out of the vehicle. Repeat the steps for the 2.0L engine by attaching fasteners for the catalytic converter to exhaust manifold. All procedures for the 2.4L engine and the 2.4L turbo engine are the same. After removing the flange gasket, throw it out. Watch for flow problems in the catalytic converter and by borescope or flashlight, look at the element to ensure there are no cracks or parts that are melted. Use a new flange gasket (1) when mounting the new catalytic converter (2). After mounting it, tighten the fasteners to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Clamp the band on the intermediate pipe and muffler, adjusting so everything is centered and tightens to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.), without over-doing it. If this sensor has been removed, fit and connect the downstream oxygen sensor and its electrical connector. Make sure the plug goes in for the upstream oxygen sensor (2). Check that the exhaust is working correctly from start-up and promptly fix any leaks, ensure the pipes are not touching the body and adjust for safety as required.
