2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Muffler Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Muffler on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before you service or repair the muffler, make sure the exhaust system is cool, especially around the catalytic converter which becomes very hot. Lift the vehicle on a hoist and spray penetrating oil onto the clamp fastener of the component you are removing, making sure the mixture you use is water with liquid dish soap, not petroleum-based products, to be safe. At the back of the muffler, cut the exhaust system ground strap, then loosen the band clamp and remove the two support isolators before you remove the muffler from the intermediate pipe. Wipe down both ends of the pipes and clean the muffler to fit them properly and replace any broken or old isolators, rusted clamps, worn supports or worn parts. Always use original equipment parts or something just like them to replace any exhaust system part. Do not tighten the clamps yet during installation until all the parts are in place and clearances have been checked. Add the muffler to the intermediate pipe and secure the isolator supports to the underbody, positioning every component front to back to prevent them from touching other car components, then secure them in place using a 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) band clamp. Be careful not to tighten the band clamps too much, so the center hourglass-shaped block does not come into contact with the clamps which could cause the band clamp to be too loose and wear out quicker. To install the new band clamp, loosen the nut, remove the broken part from the clamp and peel back the clamp arms until the spot weld snaps. Finally, run the exhaust system ground strap.
