2006 Dodge Caravan Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on a 2.4L Engine on 2006 Dodge Caravan?
A: When servicing or repairing a 2.4L engine's power steering pump, first disconnect the negative battery cable and uncap the power steering fluid reservoir and then siphon out as much fluid as you can from inside the reservoir. Lift your car safely and remove the oxygen sensor wiring harness at the rear engine mount bracket. To give you room for removing the pump, remove the exhaust system by unscrewing the catalytic converter bolts and flag nuts, breaking the connection of the isolation system with the bracket and sliding the exhaust rearward before letting it hang below the crossmember. After detaching the hose from the power steering fluid supply line, drain the extra liquid and shift the heat sleeve on the return hose to get to the pump and let the rest drain. After that, eliminate the accessory drive splash shield, unscrew the power steering fluid pressure line, then the adjuster nut and lower pivot bolt that secure the pump to the cast mounting bracket. Detach the drive belt and take the pump with the front bracket out together, removing it from the frontiques thoroughly. Remove the three bolts, wait for Pulley C-3333 if needed and do not hammer on the pulley to stay safe. Should you find that the pulley is bent, cracked or loose, you should replace it. When putting in a new pulley, use Installer C-4063 to align it with the pump shaft and press it to the end of the shaft. Instead of reassembly, begin putting the pump back by first attaching it to the front bracket, then clip it into place on the cast mounting bracket, not tightening everything fully. Place the rear nut into position, put the drive belt on and adjust it and then tighten the adjustment slot bolts and pivot bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Fit the accessory drive splash shield again, check the O-ring on the power steering fluid pressure hose for damage, put it in place on the pump and fasten it firmly, using 31 Nm (275 inch lbs). Place the heat sleeve over the return hose and then attach both the return and supply hoses. Set up the exhaust system, link up the part of the wiring harness that goes to the oxygen sensor, put the car back on its wheels, then reconnect the battery's negative terminal. Perform the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation to pump the system full of fluid and bleed the lines and carefully inspect the system for leaks.
