2006 Dodge Dakota Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Ball Joint on 2006 Dodge Dakota?
A: The first step to serving the ball joint is to take off the wheel, followed by lifting off the caliper and rotor. Following this, loosen the outer tie rod retaining nut from the knuckle and take out the tie rod with puller C-3894-A. Unscrew the upper ball joint nut and use puller 8677 to disconnect the upper ball joint from the knuckle. Repeat for the lower ball joint after you have removed its nut. With the steering knuckle removed, move the halfshaft away and raise it out of the way for four-wheel-drive models. While taking away the snap ring from the ball joint flange, grease the thread sides of all your tools well to improve their longevity. Undo the ball joints on the control arm with special tools C-4212-F, 8445-3 and 9604. After applying more extreme pressure lubrication, slide the ball joint into the control arm and press it in using tools C-4212-F, 8441-4 and 9654-1. Slide the snap ring over the ball joint flange, undo the support for the halfshaft and redo so for 4X4 models. After reinstalling the steering knuckle, put in the tie rod and hold it in place with the required 75 Nm tightened nut. For those with a halfshaft nut, torque it to 251 Nm, then place the brake caliper and rotor, the tire and wheel onto the car, check the car's ride height and align the wheels.
