2006 Dodge Dakota Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove the Left Camshaft on 2006 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before you begin, make sure the timing chain isn't rotating on its own, independent from the camshafts and crankshaft, so you don't damage the valves or pistons. To stop the ratchet from locking down too far, use Special Tool 8379 when loosening the timing chains or camshaft, as removing the timing chain cover would be necessary after this if the ratchet locks down. Remove the cylinder head cover first and put the engine at TDC for Cylinder No. 1, so the V6 marks on the camshaft sprocket are at 12 o'clock. Put a mark on just one link on the secondary timing chain, on both sides of the V6 mark, to help with installation later. Never push on the camshaft target wheel as it can cause harm. Unscrew the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt slightly so the timing chain tensioners stay in place, without removing the whole bolt. Holding the special tool between the strands of the timing chain, rapidly tap it so the tensioning rod locks the spring in place against the arm and guide. Take out the sprocket bolt and sprocket with Special Tool 8428 before the camshaft and once you do, turn the camshaft 5° clockwise to get it to the neutral position. Take out the bolts, countering their original position a little at a time, until the caps stop bearing any tension, making sure not to hit the bearing caps. Put a mark on each rocker arm before getting rid of the camshaft, along with the bearing caps. Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft journals during installation and put the left camshaft so the sprocket dowel is close to the 1 o'clock position for simpler bearing cap installation. Slide the camshaft into the cylinder head, place and tighten the bearing cap bolts in the order of their space in the head from front to rear and add about 1/2 turn of tightening to each of them, beginning at the center of the head. Frustrr the bearing cap bolts to 11 Nm (100 inch lbs.) and use them to align the camshaft drive gear with the timing chain, so the V6 alignment mark lines up with the two marked chain links. Work the camshaft with Tool 8428 until you see the dowel part line up with the slot on the sprocket, then fit the sprocket onto the camshaft. Take out extra oil from the sprocket bolt to stop it from over-tightening, use your hands to tighten the retaining bolt and then get rid of the timing chain wedge. After that, apply 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.) of torque to the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt using Special Tool 6958, plus adapter pins 8346 and put back the cylinder head cover.
