2006 Dodge Dakota Oil Pan Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Oil Pan on 2006 Dodge Dakota?
A: To start with, disconnect the negative battery cable and place engine support fixture # 8534 under the engine support fixtures before you do anything. Remove the bolts on both left and right side engine mounts and remove the structural dust cover, then remove the engine oil. Using special tool # 8534, raise the engine only enough that there will be enough space when removing the oil pan and that clearance is proper at the fan shroud and cowl. For 4WD vehicles, dip the front axle down without taking it off or removing the axle shafts, disconnect the front driveshaft at the axle, remove the pinion bracket and then loose the front axle bolts before lowering the axle on a suitable jack. It is crucial not to pry on either the oil pan or the gasket because the gasket keeps the engine windage tray together. Unbolt and remove the oil pan mounting bolts, as well as the oil pan itself and then remove the oil pump pickup tube. Look over the windage tray and gasket carefully to check if they should be replaced. Clean the oil pan in solvent, wipe it dry and be sure the surface that meets the gasket is clean and not scratched. Look for any damage on the oil drain plug and the plug hole and if you find any bends in the oil pan mounting flange, try to straighten them. First, make the oil pan gasket mating surface clean and set the pan and the pickup tube together with an o-ring. Secure both with bolts tightened to 28 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Install the oil pan, then fasten the mounting bolts to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.) in the right order. Guide the engine into the soldered parts on the mounts, fasten the left and right mount bolts until they reach 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) with tool # 8534, then remove the tool. Once your axle is reinstalled, attach the structural dust cover and put in the front axle mounting bolts, pinion bracket and front driveshaft. Pour oil into the engine, attach the negative battery cable, start the car and look for leaks underneath.
