2006 Dodge Durango Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Drive Shaft While Ensuring Proper Propeller Shaft Angle on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: First, lift the vehicle by its axles to a level position, so both the wheels and propeller shaft are able to move. Once you have the tools, get rid of the universal joint snap rings for a level viewing surface. Raise the shaft enough so that the bearing cap facing the transmission/transfer case output yoke is below. Take all your measurements by going from the front to the rear and using the same side of the car. Install Inclinometer 7663 on the yoke bearing cap or pinion flange ring, with its axis at right angles to the shaft and align the bubble in the sight glass. With the reading displayed, note down the Output Yoke Angle. Turn the propeller shaft 90 degrees and set the inclinometer on the yoke bearing cap so it matches the shaft, centering the bubble in its glass to get the measurement for the shaft angle. The operating angle of the transmission is found by subtracting the smaller figure from the larger. After that, rotate the propeller shaft by 90 degrees and insert the inclinometer onto the pinion yoke bearing cap to center the bubble vertically in the sight tube and record the angle of the input yoke. Take the larger figure minus the smaller to know the axle Input Operating Angle. For good U-joint performance, the expected angles should be less than 1 degree and operating angles should not rise to more than 3 degrees, with a minimum length of 1/2 a degree.
