You can refurbish worn or burned valve seats, but only if the angle and width are right; if they're not, the cylinder head has to be changed. To achieve a correct valve surface, use the right size pilot while refacing your stone guides. Check the center of the valve seat by using a dial indicator so that there is a maximum total run out of 0.051 mm (0.002 inch). Blot a bit of Prussian blue on the tacked face of the valve seat, slit #4 or #5 into the cylinder and turn it clockwise to install it while applying a little pressure. When removing the valve, check the top edge of the valve face; if there is blue there, lower the seat using a 15 degree stone and if it shows on the bottom, raise it using a 65 degree stone. When placed correctly, the narrowest point in the intake seat should be between 1.75 - 2.36 mm (0.0689 - 0.0928 inch) and the same section in the exhaust seat should be between 1.71 - 2.32 mm (0.0673 - 0.0911 inch). After finishing the work on the valve (4) and (5) and on the seat, check that the height of both intake and exhaust valve springs is not in excess of 40.74 mm (1.6039 inch). The face angle it holding between 44.5 - 45° is another requirement.
