2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Crankshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Reinstall a Crankshaft from an Engine on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Take out the crankshaft by first removing the engine and next the engine oil pump. Be careful not to pry the oil pan gasket, because it is secured by three points on the cylinder block and cannot be removed with the oil pan. Then, remove all the bolts holding the bedplate, remember the position of the stud bolts and make sure not to break the important sealing surface as you remove the connecting rods. Being gentle when you handle the bedplate prevents you from dropping or damaging the main bearing halves, because incorrect fitting could badly injure the crankshaft. Start by loosening and taking off the bedplate using the cast pry points, next follow with the crankshaft and the crankshaft tone wheel. Check the scoring, blueing or severe scratches on the connecting rod and main bearing bores, because disassembly could be required. When the connecting rod bearing bores are affected by damage, the piston and rod assemblies in the cylinder heads have to be serviced; if either the bedplate or cylinder block main bearing bores are defective, a new engine must be fitted instead. Whenever possible, remove the main bearing halves from the cylinder block and bedplate, clean the sealing situations and main bearing bores well and check the bedplate main bearing bores and crankshaft thrust washers for damage, changing them when needed. First, make the main bearings select fit, then add clean engine oil to the upper half of the main bearings, set the crankshaft tone wheel after that and tighten its mounting screws to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). Put the crankshaft in its place in the cylinder block, set the thrust washers and seal the bedplate to cylinder block mating surface with Mopar(R) Engine RTV sealant to keep oil from leaking. Lay a 2.5 mm (0.100 inch) thick bead of sealant on the side where the baseplate meets the cylinder block, coat the crankshaft main bearings with clean engine oil and fit the baseplate onto the block. Before installing the bedplate retaining bolts, moisten them with clean engine oil and torque them in the order the manual calls for. See what the crankshaft end play is, set up the connecting rods with side clearance, add the oil pump and lastly bring back the engine.
