2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Harmonic Balancer and Crankshaft Pulley on 2006 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before beginning to service or repair the harmonic balancer and crankshaft pulley, first disconnect the negative cable from the battery and take away the accessory drive belt. Drain the cooling system and once that's done, remove the radiator upper hose and the upper fan shroud. Place a SP6958 spanner with adapter pins 8346 over the fan and viscous assembly, unscrew it from the water pump and pull it out and at the same time, disconnect the electricity going to the fan inside the shroud which you'll notice snaps into the lower right corner of the shroud. Next, take out the damper by removing its bolt and using Special Tool 8513 Insert plus 1026 Three Jaw Puller. Carefully clean the bore where the damper fits and the crankshaft nose before the install to keep anything from getting damaged. Place the slot in the crankshaft damper over the key in the crankshaft and slide it over the crankshaft. As you thread the nut onto the shaft of Special Tool 8512-A, put the roller bearing onto the threaded rod with its hardened surface against the nut and lastly slide on the hardened washer. Apply Mopar 9 Nickel Anti-Seize or something similar onto the threads of the threaded rod. Place Special Tool 8512-A over the crankshaft to press the damper, then attach and tighten the damper bolt on it to 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.). Put back the fan blade assembly and the radiator upper shroud after securing the fasteners to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.); then, attach the shroud fan's connector. After that, secure the upper radiator hose again, re-mount the accessory drive belt, top off the coolant and reattach the negative cable to the battery.
