Q: How to Maintain and Fix an Oil Pan on 2006 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: When servicing or repairing the oil pan, first take out the negative battery cable and put into place engine support fixture tool #8534, avoiding any need to lift the engine. If you have a 2WD, get both engine mount to frame through bolts loose; for a 4WD, loosen both left and right side brackets to their mounting bolts and remove just the replaceable lower bolt on both sides. Remove the cover that protects the structure, pull the engine oil and after that remove the front crossmember. Pull the engine up just enough so the oil pan can be removed, without touching the fan shroud, the fan or the intake manifold. Hold the engine up with special tool #8534 and take out the transmission mount to crossmember nuts, then gently lift the transmission off the crossmember using an appropriate transmission jack. Do not open the oil pan or oil pan gasket, because removing the gasket will damage the engine windage tray. Remove the mounting bolts in proper step-by-step order and take the oil pan out; be sure to put the double-ended studs back into their original locations. Take out the oil pump pickup tube and then throw away the windage tray and gasket which need to be replaced with a new assembly. Wipe both surfaces at the connection point for the front cover, rear retainer, block and oil pan gasket and then add a sealing bead of Mopar Engine RTV to the four T-joints. After that, attach a new integral windage tray and gasket, then reinsert the oil pump pickup tube, using a fresh O-ring and tighten it to pump fasteners to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.). Attach the oil pan and put in the mounting bolts and studs, set according to the pattern, exerting 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) on each. Set the transmission on the crossmember, screw in the nuts and tighten them. With the special tool #8534, lower the engine onto its mounts and if your vehicle is a 2WD, use these tools to secure the engine mount on the left and right to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) of tightening. For 4WD cars, use the same tool to fix the engine mount brackets on both sides to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Take out special tool #8534, place the structural dust cover and fit the front crossmember. Place oil in the engine, reattach the negative battery cable and then start the car to check the oil seals.
