2006 Dodge Stratus Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Repair Brake Pads on 2006 Dodge Stratus?
A: For this job, you should start by putting the vehicle on a jack, taking off the two front wheels and tires and working on only one side at a time. Unbolt the caliper guide pin bolts by first lifting up the caps and removing the anti-rattle spring from the outboard side of the caliper and adapter. Take off the caliper from the rotor and adapter, so the caliper adapter keeps the outboard shoe and you remove the inboard shoe from the caliper. Use a support wire or cord from the front strut assembly to stop the hose from being damaged. Take out the outboard brake shoe from the caliper adapter and free the retaining clip by separating the inboard brake shoe from the top of the caliper piston. Repeat the same steps on the other slip of paper. Spray the brake parts gently with water, clean them with a damp cloth and make sure all residue with asbestos fibers is put in a watertight container. Check the brake shoes for areas of thick and thin wear and also make sure the gap between the wear markers and brake rotors is correct. If it's required, judge the thickness of your brake shoes, changing them out if they get worn to about 7.0 mm (9/32 inch). Check the caliper on each side and swap both inboard/outboard shoes, if either side needs them replaced. Before fitting new brake shoes, withdraw the caliper piston to its maximum, remove any protective paper on the noise suppression gasket and make certain the new inboard shoe is inserted into the piston without any rotation. Place some Mopers Dielectric grease on the adapter abutments and slider the new outboard brake shoe into the caliper adapter. Raise the caliper onto the rotor and adapter, bolt the caliper to your car guide pins and hand-tighten to about 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.) evenly, without going cross-thread. Put the caps on the caliper guide pin bolts and insert the new caliper hold down spring on the outside side. Install the assembly on the other side in the same way and put on the wheel and tire, making sure to tighten the wheel's mounting nuts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Raise the vehicle, press the brake pedal so everything engages, add or remove brake fluid as needed and make sure the brakes are functioning correctly on the road.
