2006 Jeep Commander Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Timing Chain and Its Sprockets on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: Before getting to the timing chain and sprockets, disconnect the negative battery cable and then drain the cooling system. After taking out the right and left cylinder head covers and the radiator fan, turn the engine until the mark on the crankshaft damper lines up with the mark for Top Dead Center on the timing chain cover. The camshaft sprocket should have its V6 marks at the middle or 12 o'clock position, when viewed from the crankcase. Disconnect the power steering pump, reach the access plugs from the cylinder heads, oil fill housing, crankshaft damper and timing chain cover. Cover the opening to the oil pan with the primary chain tensioner after pinning it and take care not to damage the camshaft target wheel as you remove the secondary chain tensioners. Using Special Tool 8428 to grip the camshaft steel tubes, remove both camshaft sprocket bolts and the sprockets. Draw out the bolt holding the idler sprocket assembly, advance the idler sprocket assembly and crank sprocket closer together to remove the chains and then take out both pivoting arms of the tensioner and chain guides, plus the primary chain tensioner. Review sprocket wear, check that the idler sprocket stays fixed on the arm and check the guides and tensioners for signs of grooving. Exercise and confine the secondary chain tensioner piston with Special Tool 8514 lock pin for installation. Place the primary chain tensioner atop the oil pump and tighten the bolts with 28 Nm of force. Put in the right side chain tensioner arm and the left side chain guide, tightening the bolts up to 28 Nm. Set the secondary chains upside down onto the yellow ring only after they match up with the timing marks. Apply grease to the idler shaft and bushings and fit all chains, crankshaft and idler sprockets, so that the timing is correct when put in place. Once both camshaft sprockets are fitted, check that the plated links are lined up and the V6 marks are visible. Both new chain tensioners must be installed, tightening the bolts to 28 Nm and the pins that help with the extension should be removed at this point. Loose the camshaft sprockets with four fittings and then reinstall them again, tightening all bolts to 122 Nm using Special Tool 6958. Start the engine, rotate it two full times and then check the timing marks. Lubricate both chains and inspect the ends of the idler gear. Replace the idler gear if it needs it. After that, place the timing chain cover, the crankshaft damper, the cylinder head covers and the oil fill housing and make sure the threaded plug in the right cylinder head is covered by Mopar Thread Sealant. Add the access plug in the cylinder head on the left, connect the pump to the power steering, fill the cooling system and then attach the negative cable to the battery.
