2007 Jeep Commander Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Replace a Timing Chain on 2007 Jeep Commander?
A: The first thing to do is disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system before accessing the timing chain. After that, take off the right and left cylinder head covers, then the radiator fan. Move the engine by turning it until the timemark on the crankshaft damper is aligned with the TDC mark on the timing chain cover, with the camshaft sprocket "V6" marks placed at the 12 o'clock position for the No. 1 manifold exhaust stroke. Remove the pump for power steering and the access plugs from each cylinder head to reach the chain guide fasteners from the space between the cylinder heads. Open the oil fill housing first, then reach the right tensioner arm fastener which allows you to remove the crankshaft damper. Pull the left camshaft tensioner and cover the left part of the oil pan to prevent the left secondary chain tensioner from falling into the oil pan. Then pop open the secondary chain tensioners on the side and the camshaft position sensor, not pressing on the camshaft target wheel while doing so and keeping it away from any kind of magnet. Don't twist the camshafts or crankshaft separately to stop damaging them. Disconnect the negative battery cable so you don't accidentally turn on the engine. Great the bolts securing the left and right camshaft sprockets and, with Special Tool 8428 Camshaft Wrench, pull out the left camshaft sprocket and rotate it a bit clockwise until it stops. Go through these steps for the right camshaft sprocket as well. Take out the idler sprocket assembly bolt and at the same time, push the idler and crank sprockets forward to get rid of both chains. Then, remove the pivoting tensioner arms and chain guides and finally the primary chain tensioner.
