2006 Jeep Commander Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service a timing cover on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: To start, remove the negative battery cable and pump to drain the coolant from the car. Get rid of the electric cooling fan and fan shroud assembly, then remove the radiator fan. Remove the heater pipes from where they attach to the timing cover and from the bottom of the radiator. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (1), the crankshaft damper, generator and A/c compressor, following the instructions. It's important to note that a special sealant is applied, not a gasket, to keep the front cover tightly attached to the engine block and the water pump stays in place during timing cover removal. After that, unscrew the bolts connecting the timing cover to the engine block and remove the cover. Nothing should be used to clean the timing chain cover and block surface that could damage the parts, like abrasive materials and oil liquids. Check the water passage o-rings (2) for any damage and replace if they look worn or broken. Use Mopar Engine Rtv sealer to get a 3 to 4 mm thick bead on the front cover and once installed, secure each fastener to a torque of 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.) in the advised order. Replace the crankshaft damper, A/c compressor, generator and accessory drive belt tensioner. Link the upper and lower radiator hoses, both of the heater hoses and the radiator fan back into place. Following this, top off your cooling system and reattach the negative cable to your battery.
