2006 Jeep Commander Wiper Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install Wiper Arms on the Front and Rear on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: To detach the wiper arm from the front, raise the arm over its center point, wait for the wiper blade to go up and gently pop off the plastic nut. Don't use a terminal puller to remove the wiper arm nut; just use a screwdriver or your hands. Rock the wiper from side to side to free the front wiper arm from the pivot shaft, then take it out. Before installing, position the wiper motor by turning the ignition switch to On and the right multi-function switch control knob to Off, making sure the wipers don't move and then switching the ignition to Off. With everything in park, line up the holes in the wiper arms with the corresponding pivot shafts, so the bottom edge of the wiper blade rests on the horizontal "T" marks in the lower part of the windshield blackout area. Slightly raise the wiper arm to get tension out of the spring and then press the other end down on the pivot shaft. Connect and tighten the nut holding the wiper arm to the pivot shaft to 21 N.m (16 ft. lbs.), wet the windshield, operate your front wipers, turn the switch to the Off position and make sure the wiper arm is set straight, reinstalling the plastic nut cap only when the wiper arm is in the correct position. Insert a small screwdriver into the lower edge notch on the arm near the motor and remove the cap. Then unscrew and remove the nut joining the arm to the shaft, but do not use a battery puller. Lift the arm to take it off the park ramp, then sway the skateboard slightly to get it out. Make certain the wiper motor is in its park position by turning the On headlight switch and Moving the rear wiper switch to Off until the motor stops working. When the motor is in the park position, slide the wiper arm support tab up the park ramp and place the arm's tab into the hole on top of the motor so it is above the rear wiper motor output shaft. Insert the point of the tapered mounting hole onto the output shaft and secure the nut to 10 N.m (86 in. lbs.). Then move the rear wiper arm support to its parked position, wet the liftgate glass, operate the rear wiper, turn the switch Off, check the wiper arm support on the park ramp, make any needed adjustments and finish by pushing the plastic cap over the pivot end and pressing until it snaps on.
