2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Start by raising and supporting the car, taking out the tire and wheel before you handle the steering knuckle. Keep the disc brake caliper steady to stop the brake hose from getting damaged before removing them with brake caliper (1) and caliper adapter (1). Remove the O-ring (2) and take away the disc brake rotor (1). After that, take out the bolt (2) holding the wheel speed sensor and separate its wire from the knuckle's retaining clips. If your vehicle has four-wheel drive, unscrew the axle shaft nut and take out the hub/bearing (3). Take out the outer tie rod end retaining nut with a socket wrench and separate the outer tie rod end (3) from the steering knuckle with special tool 8677 (5). Take off the nut holding the lower ball joint to the knuckle and then separate the joint from the knuckle with C-4150A (2). Detach nut (1) on the upper ball joint and remove (2) the upper ball joint from (3) the knuckle. Then, remove (3) the knuckle from the vehicle. When installing, attach the knuckle (1) to the vehicle, fix the lower ball joint into the knuckle and tighten the lower ball joint nut to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). After that, insert the upper ball joint (2) into the lower end of the knuckle (3) and attach it with the upper ball joint nut (4), putting in 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs. of torque). After fitting the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle, put on the hub/bearing and tighten it to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). For a vehicle featuring four-wheel drive, insert and tighten the axle shaft nut to 135 Nm (96 ft. lbs.). Replace the wheel speed sensor (2), join the wire to the knuckle and then set in the disc brake rotor (1) and caliper adapter (1). In the end, reattach the wheel and tire unit and carry out a wheel alignment.
